Harvest Time!

At Serena's Vineyard, the beginning of Fall marks a time for pumpkin carving, apple cider drinking, Halloween decorating, and even more exciting - it's harvest time!

2013-HarvestHarvest season is what we work toward all year. All the countless hours babysitting each and every vine, sweating in that glorious Paso Robles sunshine, are worth it when we finally get to see the fruits (literally!) of our labor.

The harvest is the most significant part of the winemaking process, and a rather precise and intricate process.  We choose a very specific timetable for harvesting based on the different varieties of grapes, their maturity level, the weather, and the sugar, acid and tannin levels of our grapes.

While we have always been incredibly hands on at Serena's Vineyard, this year Michael and I both retired from our long and successful career's as medical doctors, and we have been able to dedicate every moment to our dream - the vineyard!  And the results certainly speak for themselves.  2013 is shaping up to be one of our best harvest's yet!

We can't wait to start processing and bottling these gorgeous grapes.  Keep your eyes out for our 2013 vintage wines!  They are sure to be some of our richest and boldest yet.

Red Hat Goes Global

All the way to Shanghai!

Tommy Ng of Private Select Wines in Shanghai, and Serena of Four Sisters Ranch and Serena's Vineyards celebrate the arrival of Red Hat Vineyards in Shanghai, China.  These California wines along with the world class Paso Robles premium Serena's Vineyard boutique wines roll in a new wave of western quality and authenticity for the Chinese palate.

Wearing her famous Red Hat Serena boasted of the uniqueness of the wines:

"Paso microclimates with wide diurnal temperature swings, intensifying the lush grape flavors and the colors of the grape skins and wines, with more sunshine than France, mineral rich soils and fine well water produces wines that are front palate fruit forward, exceptionally long in the finishes, and very approachable."

The success of the 2010 vintage wines was clear with their reception March 2013 at the Chengdu China wine show.  Our Four Sisters Ranch wine has been served at the Presidential Library, the Hyatt Hotel and now the Sheraton Universal Hotel, as well as Wolfgang Puck's Bistros and other fine hotels, Universities, restaurants and wine shops.

In 2010 the Wine Spectator Wine of the Year went to a Paso Robles Syrah blend.  Our award winning premium Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah Paso wines are complimented by Cabernet and Merlot Red Hat Vineyards wines from California, at affordable prices.

For over 24 years our family has been growing grapes and producing wines in the Central Coast of California, sometimes called "Napa South."  Cheers!

How exciting to find ourselves in the middle of one million visitors!

The International Chengdu Wine and Spirits Festival filled this city with more wine displays than you can imagine. There were six hotels, some more than eight floors high, with thousands of wine and spirits displays.  Our California-bred wines from joined the celebration with wonderful responses from the wine distributors and wine lovers in Chengdu.

The new 2010 vintages of Serena's Vineyard Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, California enthralled the Chinese crowds, who are happily developing a new taste for these world class premium wines.  Central Coast wines are grown in wonderful microclimates, making them incredibly fruit forward with remarkable long finishes - quite a welcome surprise for the overseas palate.  We received a very warm welcome, and are really looking forward to new business ventures with some of the amazing folks we met out here.  Stay tuned!

The Wines

2010 Serena’s Vineyard Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon:

Our World Class Paso Robles Cabernet wine experience results from limestone rich soils and unique microclimates.  This wine has a bright raspberry and dry cranberry nose.  This wine has hints of dark cherries and currants; long on the palate, with delightful vanilla balanced tannins…goes well with lamb, roast duck, veal, steaks, pasta, rice, dark chocolates and conversation…

2010 Serena’s Vineyard Private Reserve Syrah:

Paso Robles is known for its Syrah wine: rich floral nose and a dry subtle fruit finish. You will taste a wine with cocoa, black cherry and a pomegranate finish, and ending with a hint of vanilla and a bite of tannins.  ..This wine goes well with beef, roast duck, chicken, pasta, rice, hard cheese, spicy foods and conversation.  Enjoy.

2010 Serena’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon:

This is our river cab, so named because we grow these grapes on the hillside banks of the Estrella River where it is cooler and the growing season is prolonged.  Extra time on the vine allows the grapes to fully mature to their exceptional flavor profile.  …fruit forward, rich mouth feel, and a long pleasant finish..dark cherries and vanilla…   It is a wine that begs a second glass.  This Cabernet is wonderful to serve with baked pork chops, grilled meats, Italian dishes, hard cheeses, Beef Wellington, filet mignon, pasta and rice, and just to drink and have a conversation…

2010 Serena’s Vineyard Syrah:

These grapes are grown in the ideal microclimate of the Paso Robles area where the warm days and cool nights allow the grapes to mature to their full flavor potential.  We have adjusted the Syrah’s canopy to allow just the right amount of sunlight and the ocean afternoon breeze to mingle with the fruit. It is a vigorous grape plant. This is a rich, complex and simply delicious Syrah with some earthiness, a front palate of blackberry-plum with some cherry-boysenberry hints, balanced with cocoa and coffee tones.  This food friendly wine, with a long finish and a bit of spice on the mid palate, is easy to drink and very approachable. Spicy pasta dishes, pork tenderloin, rack of lamb, soft cheeses, BBQ to name a few of the many foods enhanced by our Syrah.

2010 Red Hat Vineyards Merlot:

Our Merlot, aged on oak at cool temperatures, is a rich garnet color, with flavors of black cherries, plums and figs, with a soft, smooth finish – crisp acidity and ripe fruit flavors.  Its softness and “fleshiness” makes it delightfully sultry on the palate.  It goes well with a variety of foods, such as veal chops, rib eye steak with blue cheese and walnuts, spicy sausage soup, prime rib roast, pastas and vegetarian dishes, as well as chocolates.

2010 Red Hat Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon:

This California coastal wine is deep red with ripe berry and plum aromas, accented by toasty oak and vanilla.  You will note on the palate dark fruit flavors balanced by silky tannins and a lingering finish. ..a full bodied and complex wine that goes well with roasted and grilled meats- lamb, ribs, steak, pasta, rice, and simply conversation.

2010 Red Hat Vineyards Winemaker’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon:

Our special Estate Grown and Paso Robles Cab grapes go into this exquisite wine: unique mineral rich soils and more sunshine than France, with wide temperature variations of hot days and cool nights resulting in World Class wine - fruit forward with hints of dark cherries and black currant, filling tannins and smooth vanilla resulting an exceptional long delightful finish.  ..goes well with roast duck, steaks, lamb, veal, rice, pastas, and dark chocolate.

2010 Red Hat Vineyards Winemaker’s Reserve Syrah:

Paso Robles Syrah wine is world famous, with awards from the Wine Spectator’s top one hundred wines, 2010. Our 2010 Syrah, grown near the Estrella River hillside, with ideal soil and microclimate growing conditions has a rich floral nose.  This wine has fruit hints of black cherry and a pomegranate finish.  You can taste the cocoa, slight vanilla and a bit of tannins.  ..This robust wine can accompany chicken, roast duck, lamb, beef, pasta, rice, spicy foods, hard cheese and conversation.  Enjoy.
These wines capture the essence of California and Paso Robles, where cool nights and unique soils and microclimates allow flavors to burst forward.  These are wines that beg a second glass.  Please enjoy….

Sustainable Practices

We are out there in the vineyard to ensure the best outcome for the grapes and to produce the best product.

Nature plays a role, of course, but we have selected the best lots of our grapes and have given them extra care and attention.

We use sustainable farming practices on the vineyard to preserve the environment, such as cover crops, irrigation and canopy management, wetland protection, mechanical in-row tilling, erosion control, and minimal use of pesticides and herbicides. We are using our "Weed Seeker" and "Rodinator" equipment to control weeks and rodents without using toxic chemicals. When possible we try to use lighter weight green bottles to reduce the carbon footprint. We take great pride and are passionate in what we are doing.

We know how competitive the wine business has become and are quite mindful that quality

is the key to our success.  In order to achieve consistent wine quality our approach from the beginning has been to be involved in all critical decision making.  We selected the land, evaluated the soils, decided on the rootstocks and clones, and chose the spacing of the rows, type and adjustment of the trellising, irrigation systems, and canopy to allow just the right amount of light and air to bring the grapes to their highest potential. We also decided on fertilization, watering, thinning of the plants, timing of the harvest, selection of the winemakers, and “fine tuning” of the wine for premium quality.
